Making Space for Art is a book on the alternative spaces for art in Bangalore, India. The book focuses on 1Shanthiroad. Located at the center of the city, Suresh Jayaram – following his family tradition of making and preserving knowledge in a collective atmosphere – turned his ancestral property into an art adda, and later on expanded to accommodate the varying needs of a studio, gallery, discursive space, hangout, and much more, taking the help of the award winning architect Meeta Jain. Formally started in 2003, 1Shanthiroad is not a ‘conventional’ art lab, but a very loose structure that is capable of accommodating anything that the artists want to put under the blanket term ‘art’, including lazing around.
With essays by Suresh Jayaram, Meeta Jain, Kalpana Prakash, The Phantom Lady, Vatsala da Cunha, Gemma Sharpe, Achal Prabhala, Ayisha Abraham, and Stefan Liczkowski + Malte Heinz
